- Subject: Batteries for Kenwood TH-78A
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I finally decided on buying a Kenwood TH-78A and am now considering which
- batteries to get with it. There are actually a couple mail order places
- which will ship the radio with a battery besides the standard PB-13. This
- is how the three main Kenwood batteries compare:
- PB-13 Standard 7.2V 700A 2.5W on High Power (approx. 4.5 hrs.)
- PB-17 High-Power 12.0V 700A 5.0W on High Power (approx. 3.0 hrs.)
- PB-18 Long-Life 7.2V 1100A 2.5W on High Power (approx. 7.0 hrs.)
-
- There is also the BT-8 battery case which takes 6 AA batteries; what kind of
- output (in watts) does this provide for and how long will it last?
-
- Additionaly, how about batteries that fit the Kenwood but are made by other
- manufacturers? I'm specifically looking for a "long-life, high-power"
- battery. Any suggestions/recommendations out there? Thanks very much.

- Nope; Field Day is pretty much strictly a US/Canada event. It's not
- really a contest, per se, as the whole idea is to encourage operating
- under less than optimal conditions -- battery power, solar power,

- It can be fixed. Go to your local Radio Shack store and order the

- Increase this adjustment very slowly until you get the audio quality you
- desire.
-
- The inital adjustment is set for aprox. 3.5 KHz. If you have the proper

-
- This is to let everyone know that my news segment on the Spectrum program
- that was heard via WWCR/5810Khz, on 4/30/94, (US Time), was originally
- prepared for the previous weeks program. It, and all the other segments,
- were delayed one week by an arbitrary management decision to present a
- "listener appreciation" program last week.
-
- This means the news item, (IL scanner bill), is definately out of date. We
- were not able to update the report since Dave was in Dayton.
-
- The prerecorded segment also states that we will be taking more entries to
- rename the segment. Sorry, but due to commitments next week, I will not be
- able to extend it, it ended on its original schedule, today. The winner is
- Dave Chapchuk who snail mailed in the suggestion SPECTRUM ANALYSIS.
-
- - - -
-
- Here is a hardcopy of this weeks Spectrum Analysis.
-
- Well it seems appropriate that for our first commentary we will be
- discussing Bootleg radio. Now we've been calling it Pirate radio for the
- longest time, but when you get down to it, it has had numerous names over
- the course of time. The latest attempt to rename illegal broadcasting is
- Micro Radio.
-
- As the name implys, Micro Radio means low power operations, usually 10
- watts and under. Unlike Pirate Radio as we know it, Micro Radio is being
- touted more as a political entity, not the "for fun" and ego-tripping form
- that Pirate Radio is. The chief advocate of Micro Radio is Stephen
- Dunifer, a former guest on this program. Dunifer is a product of 1970's
- Berkley, California, where he still lives and is considered to be a former
- political radical.
-
- A few weeks ago Dunifer published what I consider to be his manefesto on
- the Internet called, Take Back The Airwaves. While I didn't agree with
- some of what he said, it did inspire about 50 comments by other users that
- discussed many of his ideas. The ideas covered everything from how
- licensed broadcast stations are playing to the largest audience to get the
- most money and have no intention of serving the minority interest of the
- community to how Micro Radio would be a true democratic representaion of
- the populace.
-
- One of the repliers was Bob Smith, the host of a radio talk show on a
- Rochester, NY, AM station who was interested in finding out more about the
- various aspects of Micro Radio. Instead of being welcomed as a possable
- supporter of the idea, within the media, he was blasted by one individual
- who claimed that Bob was part of the problem. The poster went on to
- further say that Bob was reaching his audience, but the poster wasn't
- because he did not have the money to buy a station. Bob was further ripped
- for having an audience which meant the owners could sell the advertising
- time, which meant that Bob could continue to reach his audience and the
- advertisers would buy more time. The poster went on to say that Bob was
- monopolizing the airwaves and had the nerve to solicit suggestions on how
- to make his air time more useful.
-
- Sound familiar? No? Well does the old, "you are a tool of the
- establishment" argument from the 1960's ring a bell? How about the, "It's
- people like you who are continuing the war," statement? Good Lord, I
- though we were finished with this self righteous, radical, flower-power
- trip a generation ago, but I see the attitude has manefested itself in
- another way. Comm'on folks this is the 90's, not the 70's, the revival of
- Hair is on the stage, it shouldn't be in the streets too.
-
- Now as one who is a former staffer of politically orented broadcaster,
- Radio New York International, I should talk, right? Yes, I was there
- during the Liberal period of Randi Steele and the "Dump Bush" time of Pirate
- Joe, but this attitude is childish. It is an attitude that is a detrement
- to Micro Radio. Hasn't anyone learned the lesson of RNI?
-
- You can't lobby politicians by saying I want the 10 watt Class D station
- license reinstated so I can hear Joe Shlamengie talk, if Joe Shlamengie is
- on the FBI's list of subversives. In the words of the hippie generation's
- troubador, John Lennon, "But if you're going to carry picture of Chairman
- Mao, you ain't gonna make it with anyone, anyhow". It's time to really put
- the idea of community radio back in the hands of responsable parties. Even
- the most liberal of congressperson is not going to open a pandora's box of
- supporting licenses on the idea of it being a 1st Ammendment right of the
- individual.
-
- If you want to start a movement for the issuance of these low power
- licenses, a community radio broadcasting band, or any other type of local
- communication facility, then it's time to put your support behind
- responable community agencies. Outreach programs, neighborhood youth and
- senior centers, churches and temples, support groups, chambers of commerce,
- and even the local High School; they are all the kinds of public
- institutions that would be the most politically acceptable to operate these
- Micro stations. Joining, supporting, and convincing these institutions
- that Micro Radio could be a way of extending itself out to the community is
- the way to go in my opinion.
-
- If you were to ask those politically radical individuals of the 1960's
- and 70's, you'll find that most of them, people like Abie Hoffman, Tom
- Hayden, and even Jessie Jackson, decided to work within the system to bring
- change. Being a radical, especially when trying to tackle the FCC, is not
- going to make it with anyone, anyhow.
